BLOG 1 - Personal Information

Hello there,

I'm Vicente Ulloa Colipué. I'm 19 years old. I was born and raised here in San Bernardo, where I live now. I'm a member of a family of five: my mom, a teacher; my dad, a former chef; two siblings and myself. We also had a dog called Coco.

Even though I was born in Santiago, my family came from a mapuche williche area located in the countryside of La Unión. My grandfather was from there, but moved to Valdivia when he was a teenager, and then to Santiago when he met my grandma. 

I studied at Colegio Agustiniano (Elementary and High School). But currently, I'm on my second year of Anthropology at the University of Chile.

About myself, I enjoy talking to people, getting to know their culture and traditions. I get very interested in learning mapuzugun, the mapuche language. Also collecting coins and vintage stuff. However, one of my favourite things to do is taking pictures of landscapes, nature and people.

A brief storytime...

Rayen Waterfallls. 
Purén, Araucanía Region.

Last year, I went to Rayen Waterfallls.
The place was wonderful, so I decided to take pictures.
I went down to the river, but stepped on a wet rock and fall down in a really funny way: sitting on the floor.

It was worth it, though...

    hey i been in the Rayen waterfalls, really beautiful place with a nice little walk. You did right taking that pic mate, it's a pretty good one.

This picture was taken by my mom on 25th December 2007. It shows my grandfather and I before having lunch at his house, built by himself. He was a very funny person who loved taking care of dogs, telling stories and jokes. And also, he was a mechanic so he was very fond of heavy machinery. It is an important picture for me because it is related to the time I lived with my grandparents. My grandfather became a special person in my life, he taught me values and we used to be together the whole day because he was retired. We used to go shopping, to the supermarket and after that, we used to have an ice cream sat on a bench at San Bernardo square.  This picture is one of the last ones we have. Soon after he got sick and then, passed away. However, in spite of the fact he is not physically present, I’ve grown up with his memories and teachings. Hipólito Colipué (1937-2008)

BLOG 2 - Why did I choose this career?

When I was a child, I wanted to be a history teacher. I always liked to read books about the Egyptian pyramids, about native cultures of America or just about historical events across the world. And I wanted to share that knowledge to other people as a teacher when I grew up. So, when I was on 11th grade, I decided to study something related to and I thought in Anthropology… When I was applying to University, I thought in Sociology and even History again. However, once the classes started, there was no doubt. I really love my career and how it links with people and their cultures. That's why I would like to live and work in the South, in mapuche lands, where my family originally comes from. Learning more about the culture, the language and trying to do my best for the community. Purrum (traditional mapuche dance) in Lautaro, Araucanía Region
